How well do you sleep during
the day?
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a common
disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths
while you sleep. Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They
often occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal
breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.
Sleep apnea usually is a chronic (ongoing) condition that disrupts your sleep
3 or more nights each week. You often move out of deep sleep and into light
sleep when your breathing pauses or becomes shallow. This results in poor
sleep quality that makes you tired during the day. Sleep apnea is one of the
leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness.

How do I know if I have sleep
apnea?
One of the most common signs
of obstructive sleep apnea is loud and chronic (ongoing) snoring. Pauses may
occur in the snoring. Choking or gasping may follow the pauses. The snoring
usually is loudest when you sleep on your back; it may be less noisy when you
turn on your side. Snoring may not happen every night. Over time, the snoring
may happen more often and get louder. You're asleep when the snoring or
gasping occurs. You will likely not know that you're having problems breathing
or be able to judge how severe the problem is. Your family members or bed
partner will often notice these problems before you do.
Not everyone who snores has
sleep apnea. Another common sign of sleep apnea is fighting sleepiness during
the day, at work, or while driving. You may find yourself rapidly falling
asleep during the quiet moments of the day when you're not active.
Others signs and symptoms of
sleep apnea may include:
-
Morning headaches
-
Memory or learning problems
and not being able to concentrate
-
Feeling irritable,
depressed, or having mood swings or personality changes
-
Urination at night
-
A dry throat when you wake
up
In children, sleep apnea can
cause hyperactivity, poor school performance, and aggressiveness. Children who
have sleep apnea also may have unusual sleeping positions, bedwetting, and may
breathe through their mouths instead of their noses during the day. "National

What is
the difference between a CPAP and BIPAP Machine?
The term
CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. This machine is set
at the same fixed pressure for the inhalation and exhalation phase of each
breath. A BIPAP machine delivers a higher pressure on the inhalation phase
and a lower pressure on the exhalation phase of each breath. This provides
for a more comfortable breathing experience, especially for people who
require higher pressures to keep their airways stable.

Will my insurance
reimburse me for this item?
There are hundreds of
insurance plans in today's healthcare market, along with HMO's; it is hard to
know everyone's benefits and plan. We highly recommend that you contact your
insurance carrier and ask them directly what your plan is, and whether or not
you are covered.

How would I
get reimbursement from my insurance company?
Be sure to obtain a patient
summary print out upon purchase of any equipment. This summary will list
rendering provider, your tax ID number, NPI (National Provider Number),
diagnosis code, as well as the item code. All this information is needed by
the insurance company in order to process the claim for reimbursement.

How well do you sleep during
the day?
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale
(ESS) is a questionnaire intended to measure daytime sleepiness. This can be
helpful in diagnosing sleep disorders. it was introduced in 1991 by Dr. Murray
Johns of Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
The instrument
How likely are you to doze
off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to just feeling
tired? This refers to your usual way of life in recent times. Even if you have
not done some of these things recently, try to work out how they would affect
you.
Use the following scale to
choose the most appropriate number for each situation:
-
0 = no chance of dozing
-
1 = slight chance of dozing
-
2 = moderate chance of dozing
-
3 = high chance of dozing
|
Situation |
Chance of Dozing |
|
Sitting and reading |
|
|
Watching TV |
|
|
Sitting inactive in a public place (a
theater or meeting) |
|
|
As a passenger in a car for an hour or
more without a break |
|
|
Lying down to rest in the afternoon when
circumstances permit |
|
|
Sitting and talking to someone |
|
|
Sitting quietly after lunch without
alcohol |
|
|
In a car, while stopped for a few minutes
in traffic |
|
Interpretation
The score is obtained by
adding the numbers making a total.
The Epworth sleepiness scale
has been validated primarily in obstructive sleep apnea. It is used to measure
excessive daytime sleepiness and is repeated again after the administration of
treatment.

How do I clean my
nasal or full face mask?
Daily:
Wash the mask system with warm, soapy water.
Do not use soaps with
added scents. We recommend plain IvoryŽ liquid soap or baby shampoo.
Rinse well and allow to air dry
out of direct sunlight.

Separate and hand wash the mask components and headgear in warm, soapy water. Do
not use soaps with added scents.

allow them to air dry out of direct sunlight.
Cautions:

system or tubing to direct sunlight as it may deteriorate the product
-
If any visible deterioration
of a component is apparent (cracking, tears, etc.) the component should be
discarded and replaced.
